Fear of Public Speaking

Are you cool as a cucumber or more of a rabbit in the headlights when it comes to public speaking?

If you’re not a professional speaker or accomplished actor, it’s unlikely that you will confidently say that you’re looking forward to an impending work presentation or any other sort of public speaking engagement. In fact, most people will try their utmost to avoid public speaking and some are absolutely terrified resulting in a panic attack.

The fear of public speaking, known as glossophobia, is primarily caused by a combination of psychological and physiological factors. These include:

  1. Fear of judgment or rejection: Worrying about being thought of negatively by others can trigger anxiety. This is an inherently primitive response going back to caveman days when being outcast from the group could mean harm or even death.
  2. Lack of self-confidence: Doubts about your ability to speak well or effectively communicate contribute to nervousness. Again these thought patterns trigger the brain into fight or flight mode, sending a cascade of stress hormones throughout the body.
  3. Past negative experiences: Previous self-perceived failures or embarrassing moments in public speaking can heighten fear in future situations. This is because your brain tries to protect you from the potential same experience by creating fear to make you avoid it all costs.
  4. Social anxiety: Generalised anxiety about social interactions can amplify the stress of public speaking.
  5. Physiological responses: The body’s “fight-or-flight” response, triggered by stress, can cause physical symptoms like sweating, shaking, or a racing heart or you mind going blank, which in turn increases anxiety. This is a vicious circle 😒

Any of these factors can create a strong fear of public speaking, but it is entirely possible to overcome the fear!  As this is a simply a phobia or just a lack of self-belief and confidence, it’s not a difficult one to fix using hypnotherapy and NLP alongside good planned preparation and practice.

Using simple physical and mind techniques, you can calm your physiological response to enable you to focus on your delivery and get into the flow of your presentation or speech with ease. Once you’re feeling calmer, provided you have practised your content sufficiently, things will go smoothly.

And of course, once you’ve accomplished one speech successfully, you then have evidence that in fact you are capable and can build confidence in yourself off the back of it. And you never know, you may even begin to enjoy it 🙂
